Herbal Ingredients

Aloe
Sometimes known as ‘alligator’s tongue’ or ‘crocodile tale’ because of its spiky appearance, aloe is a potent anti-inflammatory and is grown throughout Australia and tropical Asia. The cooling sap from this plant provides near instant relief to sun burnt skin after hot days in the sun, providing a healing, cool gel that instantly moisturises and softens skin leaving skin refreshed and soothed. Aloe is in a lot of our products including our shower gels, body wrap masks and the Javanese Lulur scrub.

Basil
This fragrant, spicy herb is popularly served in Asian cuisines, or eaten raw to add an intense refreshing flavor. In ancient India this herb was believed to ward off evil. In traditional healing it has been used to ease cold and flu symptoms and is known to refresh the senses and to reinvigorate the body from fatigue.

Black Pepper
Native to Southwest India and mainly cultivated in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Madagascar, black pepper has been used for over 4,000 years in the East for medicinal and culinary purposes. Because of its analgesic and antiseptic properties, black pepper is used to stimulate blood circulation and to improve the digestive system. It is said that mendicant monks of India consume 7-9 grains of black pepper daily to aid their endurance as they travel remarkable distances solely on foot! We use black pepper oil in our Balinese Boreh scrub.

Cloves
In use since ancient times by the Chinese because of their scent, and reputed mystical powers to ward off disease, and still used in modern Western dentistry today, this woody, sweet smelling oil extracted from the leaves helps reduce swelling and provide temporary relief from sprains and bruises while boosting circulation. The oil also has natural anti-bacterial properties and the spicy scent of this essential oil is used in aromatherapy to relax the mind and relieve fatigue. Clove oil is found in our Balinese Boreh scrub.

Coconut
Conjuring images of beaches, sunscreen and exotic island getaways, one of the symbols of summer, and an essential ingredient in many Eastern cuisines, the coconut nourishes both the stomach and the body. The sumptuous oil and rich milk of this ubiquitous fruit is renowned for its conditioning properties and delicious scent. Coconut milk revitalizes hair as the oil of young coconuts conditions. The moisturizing properties, fragrant scent, and rich flavor of the coconut itself ensure that none of the seed of the coco plant is wasted. Look for coconut in our Thai Coconut Butter Body Scrub.

Coffee
These days, cafés may be where you usually take your coffee, but coffee culture has its own long history. Grown for years in South America, coffee has a reputation as a gentle, yet stimulating exfoliant that improves circulation and helps to firm and tone the body. Modern research suggests that, applied topically, this bean which has enchanted the west with its smell for so long, has medicinal properties. Some passions are universal. Cucumber
Cooling and revitalizing cucumber was used perhaps as the first face mask ingredient. Slices of cucumber applied to the eyes refresh and moisturize. Its juice serves as a skin tonic, soothing the skin and tightening pores, leaving skin looking clear and healthy. Experience it in each of our wraps and scrubs.

Ginger
Native to southern Asia, ginger rhizome has been used as a domestic spice and a remedy for thousands of years. As a drink, it has long been used to soothe stomach discomfort. Applied externally, it eases aching muscles and increases blood circulation. Its oil has a warm, fresh, woody-spicy scent, which helps to clear the head and invigorate the body. Jasmine
One of the most significant flowers in tropical Asia, Jasmine symbolizes purity, respect and well-wishes and is used both as a lay flower as well as in religious ceremonies. The use of this sweet, romantic-smelling flower is deep rooted in Thailand where they are often strung into exquisite garlands, while Indonesian women weave the flower into their hair. It is also used to add fragrance to water and to soften the skin, as well as to uplift and relax moods. The oil extracted from Jasmine flowers is highly prized because the flowers need to be hand-picked before dawn and must be used by the next day.

Lemongrass
Perhaps the signature ingredient in Asian cuisine because of its sharp, fresh, lemony aroma, this grass-like herb has been traditionally used medicinally on skin complaints because of its soothing antiseptic properties and its oils for soothing hot, tired feet. The herb relieves while its pleasant scent quietly eases stress. Its invigorating properties stimulate, revive and energise, useful for treating symptoms of jet lag, clearing the head and relieving fatigue. Lime
Native to the Caribbean and Pacific islands, this citrus fruit’s oils have been a natural energizer and ingredient in herbal remedies for centuries for fever, infections and colds as well as a natural insect repellent. The lime’s acidic properties are also believed to help the skin absorb other nourishing herbal ingredients faster while leaving it with a fresh, tangy fragrance. Mint
Natives of the East have long consumed green and mint teas for their health benefits. Mint, when infused in tea, has anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties which clear the complexion when consumed. Mint also stimulates the follicles when used in hair treatments. The refreshing smell of this natural ingredient makes it popular in modern spa treatments and aromatherapy.

Papaya
Body scrubs made from this exotic fruit when ripe have become synonymous with the exotic, world-class spas of Asia. Pureéd papaya contains the natural enzyme papain, is rich in vitamins A and C, and contains AHA, making it an effective traditional ingredient that works as a mild exfoliant, gently removing dirt and impurities while smoothing the skin. Rice Bran
Treated with reverence and associated with prosperity, rice is a fundamental staple of the East and has been grown here since ancient times. Traces of rice found in an archeological site in India are believed to date as far back as 4,500 B.C.! From Japan, to Thailand to Indonesia, rice enjoys the patronage of its own gods and goddesses. Rice bran oil, extracted from rice bran which is one of the most nutritious cereal fibers, is a highly effective antioxidant and emollient for skin care due to its high vitamin E, essential fatty acids and protein content. Look for rice bran oil in all our shower gels, our base oil, our Balinese Boreh Scrub, and of course in our rice range.

Sandalwood
For over 4,000 years sandalwood has been treasured as a precious perfume tree in India. The wood serves in ancient Hindu marriage rites, being burnt in marriage tents so the scent surrounded the newlyweds. The rich, musky odor of the oil, when burned, has soothing properties for the skin and the soul, facilitating concentration during meditation. You can find sandalwood in our Javanese Lulur body scrub.

Tamarind
Rich in natural AHA, tamarind has long been used for centuries in tropical Asia as a natural exfoliator to cleanse, smoothe and brighten the skin. Its fruit, flowers, leaves, and bark are used in a variety of ways both in cuisine and in remedies. Turmeric
Originating in southern Asia, its deep orange rhizome is used extensively in the East as home spice and medicine. It is rich in minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin C, and is used internally and externally for its anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It has long been used to cleanse and clear the skin and is a key ingredient of Javanese Lulur, a traditional treatment used to pamper the bride prior to her wedding. Turmeric is also in our Balinese Boreh body scrub and in the herbal hot facial compresses.

Ylang Ylang
Native to the Philippines and grown all over tropical Asia, it’s known as one of the best trees for perfumery work. Oil distilled from its large, fragrant flowers produces an intensely sweet, sensual scent with a creamy top note. Traditionally the flowers are spread on the bed of newlyweds on their wedding night. Since ancient times, Ylang Ylang has been treasured for its anti-depressant and stimulant properties, as it soothes nervousness, increases sensuality, improves circulation and relieves skin irritation.

Apricot Seed Powder
Ground from the apricot kernel hence having the same vitamin rich properties as the oil is rich in vitamin A and E, it helps skin retain elasticity and suppleness therefore making it good for the treatment of mature, dry, sensitive skin. The seed gently exfoliates lifting off dead skin while replenishing the skin with vitamins and antioxidants. We use apricot seed powder in most of our body scrubs.

Avocado Oil
Derived from avocado kernels, it nourishes, smoothes and softens skin making it ideal for dry, mature skin and assists in the treatment of climate damaged, undernourished or ageing skin. Avocado oil is used in our range of body scrubs.

Chamomile extract
Derived from the flower, chamomile is used to reduce inflammation whilst having sedative and calming properties.

Evening Primrose Oil
A classic ingredient in beauty products and used in modern naturopathic treatments, evening primrose oil contains high amounts of gamma linolenic acid, which has been shown to balance skin problems and accelerate wound healing.

Grape Seed Oil
Expressed from grape seeds traditionally using a cold pressed method, grape seed oil is used as a natural antioxidant. It is also a good base oil ingredient.

Clay
Sometimes called silt, clay draws impurities from your skin, with a toning action which stimulates the skin by bringing fresh blood to damaged skin cells.

Green Tea Extract
Widely recognised for its cleansing properties when used in hot tea, green tea has been noted to be rich in potent antioxidants called catechins and may provide anti-aging benefits if used with regularity. There has been recent claims that regular consumption of green tea may aid in cancer prevention although more research is needed. You can find green tea extract in several forms in our green tea range.

Jojoba Oil
The quality that has made it most desirable is its ability to be absorbed readily through several layers of skin providing softness without greasiness. Jojoba’s resistance to oxidation means that it does not require additional chemical preservatives making it a key ingredient in natural beauty products. The seed from which the jojoba oil is extracted is used in many of our body scrubs.

Honey
High in antibacterial properties, honey is a natural healer, rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals that help to slow down the ageing process. As a by-product of bees, honey is a nutrient rich emollient and humectant making it perfect for our body wrap masks. Honey is also used in our Javanese Lulur body scrub.

Shea Butter
Extracted from crushing the root of the karite tree grown in West Africa, shea butter protects the skin, improves its suppleness and elasticity and promotes skin healing. You will find shea butter in our body scrubs and moisturisers, giving them a wonderful consistency to move across the skin whilst soothing it.

  2. I read similar article also named   Herbal Ingredients, and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me
